Advantages of Online Poker: Multi-Tabling

Article by Alex McCay | 2008

Why play online poker? If you're a poker player, there are many reasons to consider getting involved in the Texas Holdem online game. One of the most popular reasons involves the practice of multi-tabling in your poker sessions.

What Is Multi-Tabling in Online Poker?

As you might guess, multi-tabling means playing at more than one poker table at the same time, something that is clearly not possible in live poker. You can multi-table cash games, tournaments or a combination of both. You can multi-table a variety of games.

In the early days of online poker, poker software would only allow you to play two, three or four games at once. Some of today's software lets you play an almost unlimited number of tables at one time.

Why Multi-Table in Online Poker?

In poker, discipline and patience is important. However, folding hand after hand can get boring and players can get antsy and make mistakes. When you multi-table, you're almost always in action somewhere, so it's much easier to fold a marginal hand and wait for the next one.

In addition, if you are a winning player with a positive expected value, you can increase that expected value by adding tables. Adding tables is an option, assuming there is not a commensurate loss of concentration and skill.

What Are the Down Sides to Multi-Tabling in Online Poker?

When multi-tabling for the first time, just add one or two tables until you get the hang of it. It can become easy to get confused if you aren't used to it. Also, make sure to develop a system for knowing which games are being played where on your screen. You don't want to confuse your no limit cash game for a sit and go when someone is threatening to put you all in.
